Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre presents its 17th annual production with live orchestra, choreography by Robert Kelley and sumptuous costumes and scenery at the Civic Auditorium.  This is a fully professional experience.  It is our goal to find a role for every dancer who auditions, however, standards are high for levels of concentration and discipline.

Rehearsals begin the first weekend in October, and continue through performance dates.  Performances are December 21, 22 and 23.  Performances feature professional guest artist and alumna Melody Mennite in the starring role of the Sugar Plum Fairy.  Parent participation is required, either behind the scenes, backstage, or prior to performances.  There is a participation fee, TBD.

On the Audition Day:
Dancers age 4-6 years (who are enrolled at The Studio, School of Classical Ballet to qualify) will register at 4 pm and audition 4:30-5:00 pm.
Dancers age 7-10 years will register at 3 pm and audition 3:30-4:30 pm
Dancers age 11 and up (including pointework if you are en pointe) will register at 1:30 and audition 2-3:30 pm.

The auditions consist of the dancers learning and demonstrating choreography from the ballet.  The youngest age groups will be given simple directions and will be asked to demonstrate their level of self-discipline in a group situation.  They will be asked to show they can hear and count the music, show they know the difference between their right and left, wait quietly while others dance, and follow simple instructions.  Some roles have height requirements; others require acting in the audition.  Basic skills include good posture, skipping with the music, marching with an even rhythm and so on.  The more experienced the dancer, the more they will be asked to learn and show in the audition.

Participation paperwork is handed out to accepted dancers at the conclusion of each audition.  Casting will be posted on the SCBT "Nutcracker" board at The Studio by September 26.  It will not be posted on the website to protect the identity of our minor dancers.

Auditions for ages 7 and up are open to the public.  No experience necessary!
